Norman Vincent Peale was an American minister and author and one of the world’s most widely recognized motivational speakers in the 20th century. His most popular book, The Power Of Positive Thinking, has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and takes a Christian perspective and real-world approach to positive psychology.

Since Peale wasn’t a scientist, many mental experts disregarded the ideas from his book, and it received a lot of both favorable and highly critical feedback. However, it’s hard to deny the real-world impact his ideas have had, he himself being living proof that they work – after a long and by any measures successful life, he died at age 95 on Christmas Eve in 1993.

It’s not every day that you get to learn from someone who’s received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, so let’s not waste time, shall we?

Here are 3 lessons to help you think more positively:

Start with confidence and watch your problems shrink.
Your world is nothing more than the thoughts you have about your experiences.
In order to live worry-free, first imagine a worry-free life.
Let’s pump up the positive jam!

Lesson 1: Believe in yourself and visualize your goals to see how small your problems are.
Yes, confidence is important, because if you feel inferior, you’ll act inferior. We know confidence alone doesn’t solve all problems. After all, it’s not the same as competence, and telling a kid who’s horrible at math that she’s great won’t make her study more for the next test.

However, the case for believing in yourself, that Peale makes, is one we’ve all experienced: the self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s a common idea from self-help books, too, Napoleon Hill already addressed it 80 years ago.

When you start a new job and go in on the first day, thinking no one will like you, that you’ll probably screw up and not fit in well, well guess what, you’ll behave in a way that makes sure it comes true! Even worse, when you then get the feedback that “you were right” this drives even more negative thoughts, thus starting a vicious cycle.

It is up to you to actively change your thoughts and believe that you can bring value wherever you go. Peale suggests an exercise to help you do that, which happens to be backed by science.

Visualize your goals and the positive outcomes you want. What should your life look like in 6 months? Which goals do you want to achieve? Then, contrast those by visualizing the problems and obstacles that you might face along the way.

This is called mental contrasting and has been proven to cause changes in behavior that last for weeks with as little as a few minutes worth of the exercise.

Lesson 2: Your attitude determines your entire life.
This quote really struck me:

Your world is nothing more than the thoughts you have about your experiences.
Of course all the problems in your life are real. And yes, some of them might take a few years to solve, like debt, or a serious illness. But how you react to those problems is entirely up to you. You might not be able to solve those problems at the push of a button, but your attitude is something you can change from one second to the next.

Your world, your reality, is only determined by what you think about everything you experience in life.

For example, if you leave your house tomorrow morning, and are almost hit by a car, which breaks at the last second, you can treat this as a bad sign and spend the rest of the day walking around afraid of anything and everything. Alternatively, you can take this experience as a wonderful gift, a miracle even, and live your life to the fullest, enjoying every single second of the day and being grateful.

Don’t choose negative thoughts, when you can choose positive ones. Ever.

Lesson 3: Imagine your life free of worry to become less concerned about the future.
Here’s a super meta hack for worrying less: Imagine yourself as a worry-free person in the future. Just imagining that it is possible for you to live without worry will take a lot of your current worries away.

Worry is a major source of stress, and thus often leads to heart disease, arthritis and other sicknesses which cause your life expectancy to go down. So it is in your best interest to eliminate it, wherever possible.

Close your eyes, look into the future, and imagine yourself a few months or years from now, living free from all the worries that currently plague you, and you’ll feel much better when you open your eyes again.

Peale calls this draining your mind and it’s especially helpful before going to sleep, because then positive thoughts will sink into your subconscious, instead of negative ones.

My review of The Power of Positive Thinking
I’m a huge sucker for positive psychology. It’s easy for me to get carried away with it, and I’ve spent many years just sitting around, being a massive optimist, but not doing anything to get to where I wanted to be. Eventually, I’ve gotten my own personal reality check and now I know it takes more than a bunch of happy thoughts to make stuff happen.

However, that hasn’t shifted my believe that positive thinking works even an inch. I believe a positive attitude is at the root of every successful person, however you may define that.

This book is a classic, and the blinks do a great job at summarizing the most important point. I think I’ll stick with them for now, though I have to say I’m curious about some of the examples of people who successfully applied the tactics, which are detailed in the book. You can learn more about the author here.

What else can you learn from the blinks?
How you can get others to care about you, by caring about them
Why you’re not a special snowflake (and how that’ll help you ease the burden of your own problems)
What you can learn from children “the experts of happiness”
Why you should focus on the upsides of being stuck in a bad situation
How the bible can help you solve your problems, and which criteria must be fulfilled for that
Why it’s important to have faith, no matter what you believe in
Who would I recommend The Power Of Positive Thinking summary to?
The 31 year old worrier, who sighs at every potential obstacle, the 57 year old high performer, who often goes to bed thinking about next day’s problems, and anyone who’s a pessimist.

Ps Lee Roy 10/12/17 at the feet of Jesus

Skill “Lo lkung, Lo kung...” Get attention by talking softly.

Q1 which 3 occasions a woman (Mary) is found at the feet of Jesus?

MARTHA a strong woman, well to do..open her house, prepare the food. Difference personality as God made us difference & God love is the same. Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening. “BUT” MARTHA distracted, she came to the Jesus. Suddenly she said “don’t you care...that my sister has left me to do by myself” why? Her mind filled with Jesus but later she filled with Mary. Symptom of “me alone” then said “tell Mary to help me” & Martha is angry. Jesus said softly & slowly, “ Martha Martha (2x) u worry about many things.

When serve God, must be gladness & focus on Jesus.

What is the issue?
She’s thinking of Mary instead of Jesus, self occupied & sad/angry.

What should be our response?
Be Jesus conscious, ***what’s Mary has chosen, will not be taken fr her.***

Mary didn’t said one word. Sometimes ppl complain Abt you not true, even outwardly like true, Mary keep quiet & Jesus defended Mary.

Story twisted...Mary said Martha shld stay at feet, Jesus May response the same way..

Learnt: serve with heart, focus in jesus. Not where the place but serving fr heart.

Look at the posture of Mary. At the feet of Jesus (rest, Let Jesus defends you) Mary crying (John 11:36) Jesus on-looking at Jesus weeping.. Jesus wept.

At the feet of Jesus, the break thru in life.

Mary anointing perfume on Jesus feet (said nothing, just crying..., releases).  When your enemy said, your sacrifice waste, jesus will said leave us alone” jesus said, what is has done for me is a beautiful thing.

What u hv chosen, cannot be taken away fr her. Leave her alone. She done a beautiful thing. WHEN GOSOEL IS PREACHED, Jesus said tell about her!

SCRIPTURES for worship

Invitation from Psalm 3

Salvation belongs to the Lord;
your blessing be on your people!
Psalm 3:8
This is a perfect example of a call to worship. It’s simple, concise, and immediately reminds listeners that they’re gathered as God’s people. Drawing attention to the Lord’s salvation and the blessings that he liberally pours out upon his children immediately creates an atmosphere of worship.

Call to worship from Psalm 5

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
Psalm 5:7–8
This call to worship is a little on the long side, but still effective. For an invitation of this length, it’s helpful to have your musicians play under it. This will help draw the worshipers in and keep their attention as the call to worship is recited.

I will give thanks from Psalm 9

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High
.—Psalm 9:1–2
Obviously, the Psalms are a perfect source to mine for calls to worship. After all, it is the Jewish hymnal, and it’s full of beautiful expressions of reverence. This is a perfect invitation, especially if it transitions immediately into singing.

Shout for joy! Psalm 66

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
All the earth worships you
and sings praises to you;
they sing praises to your name.”
Psalm 66:1–4
If you’re planning on kicking worship off with an up-tempo song, this passage from Psalm 66 is a great place to start. It’s emphatic, powerful, and perfect for building up worshipful enthusiasm.

Let us worship and bow down: Psalm 95

Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!—
Psalm 95:6
Brief but compelling, this call to worship is really on the nose. There’s no question what the congregation is being invited to do. It’s the simplicity of this call that makes it so powerful. It’s a good way to begin a worship service that will start slowly and build to an energetic finish.

Make a joyful noise! Psalm 100

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 100
Here’s another longer call to worship that can be used in a number of ways. You can call people to worship with the first stanza, and build the song choices around the other stanzas introducing each song with the appropriate verses.
You can also have people in the congregation stand up and read a different stanza from their place in the sanctuary as a call to worship

Being a mother or in law

Article from Christianity Malaysia

Healthy in-law relationships contribute to the success of marriage.

“Parents and their married children can resolve differing points of view in a mature and gracious manner,” says Dr. Howard Hendricks of Dallas Theological Seminary.

Parents will find the following guidelines helpful in avoiding such conflicts, keeping their in-law relationships strong and healthy and contributing to the success of their children’s marriage:

Don’t give advice unless the young couple specifically asks for it. Even if they ask your opinion, be careful how the counsel is given. Do not preach or lecture. Instead, simply suggest solutions, giving the couple freedom to accept or reject them.
2. Don’t offer financial aid unless the young couple explicitly requests it. It is important for the couple to establish their independence – emotionally and financially. As difficult as it may be to watch your child and his or her spouse face financial struggles, realize that those trials are valuable for them as they develop their life together.

3. Keep your personal questions to a minimum. Remember, a couple’s primary allegiance should be to each other, not to either set of parents. The new couple needs privacy in order to develop a meaningful relationship.

4. Respect the couple’s confidence when they confide in you. Don’t repeat what they have told you to friends or other relatives, or you may lose their trust — and rightfully so.

5. Don’t expect the new couple to live according to your standards and values. Your child and his or her spouse are individuals starting their own home. They need to develop their own family traditions, independent of those observed by their parents.

6. Let go of your offspring, giving the couple room to live their own lives. Rather than living through your children’s lives, find activities of your own. Don’t expect the couple to spend excessive amounts of time with you. Only by letting go will you be able to build a healthy relationship with them.

7. Treat the couple with respect, and don’t belittle them or their decisions. They may have a lot to learn, but they need to learn these lessons themselves. Allow them to make their own mistakes, and don’t adopt an “I-told-you-so” attitude if they fail.

8. Don’t expect your in-law to call you “Mom” or “Dad.” He or she may feel most comfortable using your first names. Accept the decision gracefully — don’t make a major issue out of it.

9. Take a genuine interest in your new in-law as a person. Try to find out about his or her interests. Attempt to relate to your in-law in a meaningful way and on his or her terms.

10. Don’t treat your in-law as a rival who has stolen your child’s love. Welcome the new addition into your family – you’ll multiply the love, rather than divide it.
